Radiotherapy in South Asia: Infrastructure, Human Resource Capacity, and Future Needs

Purpose/Objective(s)

Limited information on the status of radiotherapy in South Asia is available. The main purpose of the study was to assess radiotherapy infrastructure and related human resource capacity in the region. An effort also was made to identify the future requirements of teletherapy units, radiation oncologists and medical physicists for the region, based on the projected number of new cancer cases by 2030.

Materials/Methods

In this study various resources were used to gather relevant information:1.DIRAC (https://dirac.iaea.org/) 2. A questionnaire based survey.3. IAEA project meeting reports.4.Personal communications. The data was analysed and future needs of teletherapy equipment and human resource capacity in the region was estimated using published IAEA guidelines. The information is updated till Jan 2014.
